Multimedia Authoring

Multimedia represents the pulling together of several forms of art and science. However, its exact definition is a bit vague. The main reason for this is that multimedia is a very broad term. The term multimedia describes a number of diverse technologies that allow visual and audio media to be taken and combined in new ways for the purpose of communicating. Applications areas include entertainment, education, advertising, marketing, commerce, research etc. Multimedia often refers to computer technologies. Nearly every PC built today is capable of multimedia because they include a CD-ROM drive, and a good sound and video card. But the term multimedia also describes a number of dedicated media appliances, from digital VCRs and interactive television, to advanced wireless devices, to public television screens. The meaning of multimedia will continue to expand as technology evolves and new applications are invented.

Some examples of computer-based multimedia technologies are:

These technologies, among many others, are combined to create a multimedia application and are usually delivered on a CD or a DVD. However, they can be delivered through any communication or storage medium, such as through HTTP or even e-mail.

A multimedia project involves an interactive application, coupled with sound and sometimes video as well. All of the multimedia projects that we have attempted so far required an introductory video sequence and an interactive multimedia application. For example, for Saudi Aramco, we did a project that required us to generate a video using our NLE system, and then incorporate that into the interactive application that was developed using Macromedia Director and Flash.

We can also deliver multimedia applications on multi-region DVDs, while using full advantage of this new format.
